Saxophonist and educator James Sterling is an active contemporary musician located in Austin, Texas. As a performer he has received numerous honors including 1st prize at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition as soprano saxophonist of the Ikiryo Quartet, as well as performances at several national chamber music competitions including the Fischoff Competition, Coleman Competition, Plowman Competition, Coltman Competition and the NASA quartet competition. As an advocate of new music James has performed concerts with the new music collective Musiqa and premiered works by Andrew Boss, Russell Podgorsek, Daniel Webbon, and Charles Halka.
James completed his Graduate studies in Saxophone Performance at the University of Texas with Stephen Page, and his undergraduate studies at the University of Houston with Dan Gelok. He holds a private studio in the Austin, TX area with students ranging from beginner to advanced and his students have achieved success at the TMEA region, area, and state levels as well as undergraduate collegiate auditions.
